Our commitment

a beautiful balance

Surrounded by nature

For over two decades, the farmers of Pandamatenga have stood as dedicated guardians of Botswana’s most effective wildlife fence. This remarkable 150-kilometer electric fence is the result of a collaborative effort between the Government of Botswana and the African Development Bank. Despite the challenges, the farmers have consistently maintained the electric fence at their own expense, protecting 45,000 hectares of productive land from the persistent threat of wildlife crop raids.

The Pandamatenga farming area is not just a case of agricultural success in Botswana; it is a unique example of balance between farmers and nature. Here, farmers coexist with some of the most pristine wildlife on the continent, creating a delicate equilibrium that benefits both the land and its inhabitants.

Since the wildlife fence’s construction in 2002, grain production has soared to new heights. This surge in productivity has enabled Pandamatenga farmers to play a crucial role in bolstering the nation’s food security, year after year.

Their commitment and hard work have elevated Pandamatenga to a pivotal role in Botswana’s agricultural landscape. This transformation stands as evidence that with the right resources and a collective vision, it is entirely possible to achieve a harmonious blend of sustainable farming and wildlife conservation.
